  • Teaching Philosophy

Every student has a spark of interest about design when they decide to pursue an education in the design field. I see the university as the hearth and my roll in students’ lives as the fuel to ignite their flames of knowledge about design. Each bit, each stage of the learning process should further that burning passion for information. I do this thorough explanation of processes, reinforced by in-class practice, outside-classroom projects, and I test their results.    MORE…

I encourage collaborative work in- and outside of the formal classroom. Teaching through the scientific method allows for this kind of playful experimentation: formulate a question (what is the problem), research the problem (why is it a problem), form a hypothesis (why the problem exists), form predictions and test (if we do this, then we should get that; now let’s try it out), analyze the results (does it work), and share the results (show the work).

This process develops skills in critical thinking, life-long learning techniques, analytical strategies, and prepares students for careers in the communication, interaction, product, or service design industries. This experimentation and play permits students the freedoms to explore the possibilities of hands-on creation. Outcomes are measured with direct questions to students about completed projects (What worked? What didn’t work? How could the process be improved upon?). I plan to foster this understanding to further my abilities, in teaching to sustain design education and community involvement through organizations such as the AIGA and personal efforts. Additionally, I want to empower students with entrepreneurial abilities, skills, and knowledge to pursue self-initiated careers. I enjoy teaching and igniting the fire for design in my students. It is our responsibility to pass along our knowledge and information to others so young designers can blaze new trails of understanding in all fields of study and craft. My research centers around social design, improving the learning experience of mentorships and internships to tackle issues of high unemployment among young designers, and nonprofits needing greater time commitments from designers. I also hold interests in science, technology, and biometrics.

    Discipline of Design

Design is currently seeing a rise in interest from several industries. Companies like IBM, Whole Foods, Intuit, General Motors, and traditional advertising and design firms are looking for designers. Most recently it was stated in an article entitled »Why VC Firms Are Snapping Up Designers« on FastCoDesign.com, VC’s are hiring designers to help the companies they invest in to succeed, »A designer can bring a viewpoint of not just aesthetics, but economics and usage« (John Meada).    MORE…

Design is being valued in completely different way. Design isn’t just making things look good any more, it’s making companies more viable because of critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, social based design is stronger than before because nonprofits see how design can increase messaging, because »...we live in a culture where social issues, as much as commercial products, require effective communications« (Social Work: Saatchi & Saatchi’s Cause-related Ideas). Designers are being appreciated for their abilities to analyze client issues and synthesize resolutions.

Designers need to concern themselves not only with creative but with how technology works, and how to create with current electronic media and the technology of tomorrow. Michael Rock writes, »An examination of the designer-as author could help us rethink process, expand design methods, and elaborate our historical frame to incorporate all forms of graphic discourse. ...[T]he primary concern [for design is]... what it does and how it does it« (Graphic Design Theory). Designers who understand design, interactive coding, user interface, and user experience will be better prepared for tomorrow’s top positions. This practice will require working in collaboration with persons trained and working in other fields, like science and engineering. Someone who can think on their feet, and execute projects with skill and precision will be highly sought-after. This shift in focus needs to be addressed by higher education.
